Quick answer
Online fitness coaching is not dead, and it is still worth it if you pick one kind of client and prove you can help them. The market is crowded with trainers who all sound the same, not with trainers who are clearly the best fit for one person's problem.
It feels that way when you scroll. Everyone has a six-pack, a transformation photo and a "DM me to start" caption. But look closer. Most of them are saying the same thing to everybody.
That's the real problem. It's not too many trainers. It's too many trainers in the same pond. I call the fix pick your pond. Compete only where your proof can win. If you've lived through losing weight after two kids, or getting strong after a back injury, that's your water. Start there. Move to a bigger pond only after you've earned it with real results and real attention.
Here's why this matters. The person scrolling isn't looking for a trainer. They're looking for someone who gets their exact problem. When you talk to everybody, nobody feels like you're talking to them. When you talk to the mom who's tried everything since her second kid, she stops scrolling.
Then find your flip. That's the belief about fitness you truly hold that almost nobody says out loud. Say it, test a few versions, and keep repeating the one that lands. People don't hire the trainer who sounds like everyone else.

I won't give you a made-up average. Nobody's average helps you anyway. Your income is simple math: how many clients you have, times what you charge, times how long they stay.
Here is example math, not a promise. At $250 a month, ten clients is $2,500 a month. Forty clients is $10,000 a month. Raise the price, keep clients longer, or add clients, and the number moves.
So is online personal training profitable? It can be, but only if you protect your price. Sell the vacation. Talk about where your client hurts and where they'll land, not the sets and macros in between. Nobody wakes up wanting a macro plan. They want to feel good in their clothes again.
And when someone pushes back on price, add value instead of cutting it. Cheap coaching makes you work more for less.

Start at the finish line. Pick the monthly income you want, divide it by your price, and that's your client number. Now you know what you're building toward before you post a single video.
Then forget the big number for a minute and get one client. Use whatever you have: old gym clients, friends, your current followers. Nail one before you build for a hundred. Your first client teaches you what to say to the next ten. You'll hear the words they use for their problem, and those words become your next posts.
I went from $0 and borderline homeless to managing a team of personal trainers with a full book of clients. It didn't happen from one good post. It happened from reps. Be patient with the results and impatient with the work you control today.

Content that teaches the one client you want, and gets them to raise their hand.
No. It's too late to be a generic trainer who talks to everyone. It's not too late to be the obvious choice for one group of people with one problem you understand from the inside.
It works when the coach gives clear steps and checks in fast. Most online coaching fails because clients get a plan and then silence. Answer quickly, keep the plan simple, and stay in contact.
No. You need the right people to trust you. A small audience that sees you solve their exact problem will buy before a big audience that only watched you for entertainment.
There's no honest fixed timeline. It depends on how clear your message is, how often you post, and how fast you follow up. Focus on the reps you control, and the first client comes from those.
